Its is said that the greatest English Victories on the battlefields of history were won and lost on the cricket pitches of Eton. As in days gone by great military generals learnt the art of forward strategic thinking while playing this game at school. Day and Night MatchesThese matches may suit your timetable more. They start late afternoon and finish early evening to allow people to finish work and enjoy an evening of cricket in the late summer evenings. The Famous Canterbury Cricket Ground LimeTreeIf you do visit the ground, be sure to look up the famous lime tree that used to sit on the cricket grounds boundary until January 2005 when it became victim to high winds. The tree, more than 200 years old, had been a landmark at the St Lawrence Ground since it opened. If the ball hit the tree it was counted as four runs. The ground itself was unusually actually built around the tree. A new tree has now been planted on the ground, although it is currently less than 6ft high.
