Marlowe TheatreThe Marlowe Theatre, originally opened just before the First World War, has been both a theatre and a cinema in its past. It was named after the famous playwright Christopher Marlowe, a contemporary of William Shakepeare, and a local boy from Canterbury! There has been a couple of different buildings on the site and currently there is a development going on with a new project due to open in late 2011. This new 1000 seater theatre will be joined by a smaller 200 seater that will, between them, meet the demands of theatre goers and to provide a more flexible venue. This will ensure that different types and styles of events can be held in Canterbury.
This year the Panto in Canterbury is Peter Pan, and I am really lookingforward to taking them. I enjoyed many evenings in the original Marlowe Theatre and I cannot wait for the new one to open. One of my favorite things to do is take my children (when they were smaller) and grandchildren to the pantomime at Christmas time. Many a giggle have I had at this wonderful theatre. Last year we saw Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and the children loved it. This year we are all looking forward to Peter Pan, which apparently will have Adrian Edmonson (of the Young Ones fame). Even though the it is currently undergoing such a huge rebuild, the Marlowe is still putting on performances at a number of different venues in and around Canterbury.
